Record-setting day at East Coast Relays

Randolph, Roxbury girls rewrite county books

MORRISTOWN -- Briana Feldhaus pulled her teammates in for a group hug. All four of the Randolph hurdlers beamed, proud of the Morris County record they had just set. The Rams didn't even mind that they'd finished second in the shuttle hurdles at the East Coast Relays.
The time was the important thing, and it was very fast.
Randolph finished in 1:03.75, about a second and a half behind overall winner Union. Senior Justine Ameye led off what head coach Len Pietrewicz called "her best race of the season" in 15.5 seconds. Senior Julianne Kovary turned in a solid second leg running into a stiff headwind at Morristown High School. Freshman Kara Scheideler "was flipping out the whole time Justine was running, I was so nervous," but turned in a solid 15.5-second third leg. Feldhaus (15.2 into the wind) closed out the record, which had been the Rams' goal for two years.

Matched up against Hanover Park at the East Coast Relays a year ago, Randolph finished second in its heat while pushing its Morris County rival to the record of 1:04.11. The girls were determined to keep that from happening again on Monday.

"We had one last chance and we got it," Feldhaus said. "It was so annoying last year that we missed it. We were really close. It made us grow and learn."

Added Ameye, "It's our last time running together, the perfect race to do it. ... Someone better not break it next year."

Track Athlete of the Week

Briana Feldhaus of Randolph came back from a "garbage time" in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles to win the event. The Rams junior hit the second hurdle and almost fell during qualifying, yet still had the second seed in the final. Feldhaus concentrated on defeating Columbia senior Tracey Fan Fan, who had come out ahead in the 100 meters on Tuesday.

"I had to buckle down and get it done," Feldhaus said. "It was like, 'All right, I know I can do it." But that (prelim) time was so bad."

Junior

Feldhaus anchored a pair of Randolph victories at the Morris County Relays over the weekend. Feldhaus closed out the shuttle hurdles (1:05.65), as well as out-leaning Parsippany to claim the 4x100 on Friday. The junior was part of the Rams' sixth-place 4x200 on Saturday. The sprinter also extended herself to the 4x400, which clinched the team title for Randolph.

Morris County Relay Champs...

Okay okay I know I'm sooooo damn annoying when it comes to Bri and her Track... Kill me i'm a proud mother... lol Well here is what the reporter wrote in the Star Ledger regarding the meet....

Randolph girls overcome collision, claim Morris County Relays title

Not even a mid-race collision in the shuttle hurdles could stop the Randolph track team.
On the second leg of the race, sophomore Rachael Verrone collided with a hurdles crew volunteer after clearing the second barrier. The student was attempting to fix a hurdle that was knocked askew during the race and didn't get off the track in time.

``I was worried because I didn't want to touch a hurdle (with her hands) and get disqualified, Verrone said. ``I just had to get back into it and not give up.
Verrone composed herself quickly and finished her leg, which allowed Kara Schneider and junior anchor Briana Feldhaus to catch Butler and Morris Hills and win the race in 1:05.65.

It was that kind of day for Randolph, which made the most of its scoring opportunities and seized its first team title in three years at the 35th Morris County Relay Championships yesterday in Denville.

Randolph, which also won the 4x100-meter relay and scored in nine of 16 events, totaled 66 points and claimed its third title in six years. Madison won five field events and scored 55 points to secure second place, the best finish in the programs history.

``This was a long time coming for us, Feldhaus said. ``We all wanted this so badly. You could just tell, the way everyone worked so hard. Rachael crashed into somebody in the hurdles and kept going. I'm so proud of her.

The only negative to come out of the Randolph camp was that the shuttle hurdles foursome of Justine Ameye, Verrone, Schneider and Feldhaus missed their intended target of the meet record, which was 1:04.11, set by Hanover Park last sprint.

Michelle Kusik, Rachel Palacio, Justine Ameye and Feldhaus won the 4x100 in 51.57.
