MADISON -- To many, the Drew University indoor track facility, with its high, gray ceiling and spacious interior, resembles an airplane hangar. Fitting since on Wednesday night at the Wayne Valentine Invitational, Briana Feldhaus proved she can fly.

Feldhaus, a junior, made Randolph High School history in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking in at a nasty 8.53 to break the previous mark by .01, which she shared with Terry Gantz (1983).

Feldhaus couldn't believe it.

"I didn't think I did that well," she said.

Neither did her head coach, Len Pietrewicz.

"I wasn't sure," he said. "It's something we've been waiting for."

Feldhaus' previous-best was the 8.57 she ran in defeat at the Drew Invitational on Dec. 28. This time, she wouldn't be denied, despite Ridge's Josefine Kvist (8.65) nipping at her heels.

The Rams' junior speedster later took silver in the 300-meter dash in 44.17 to senior Nicole Binns (44.09) of Morris Knolls, who also won the 55-meter dash (7.76).

WOW - I looked at the previous record (that Briana tied in 2007 at 8.54) She now owns a record that was held since 1984. Every meet brings strength, speed and accolades. Way to go Briana!
